INTAKE MANIFOLD

Postby surfinbooda » Sun Feb 07, 2010 7:05 am

Is it possible to put an aluminum manifold and 4 barrel carb on my 88 GW and keep the stock vac lines? If so who makes the manifolds and carbs for a painless switch over.

88 GW mostley stock
79 Wagoneer rino liner inter/ext trail rig
06 Dodge Cummins parts hauler
soon to be 83 CJ-7 360

An edelbrock performer is the way to go. The egr version should have all the provisions for the vacuum and smog stuff. Summit has pretty good prices on carbs too, but you could get away much cheaper buying a used one and rebuilding it.

OK...but which manifold to buy to get the best performance/torque/mileage?

I hear that 600 cfm carbs are more than enough.

The edelbrock. The stock manifolds are not that bad. Some of the earlier models had stock type 4 barrel manifolds. Not performance oriented at all though. Or did you mean which carb?
The truck avenger is arguably the best off road, but pretty expensive. Any 4 bbl for mileage is going to depend on keeping your foot out of the back two barrels. The motorcraft 4 bbls are pretty good off road and can be had fairly cheap used, but not the best performance carb. The edelbrock 1406 carb is good for performance, but not great for serious off roading. Q-jets are real good, but very complicated to tune. A TBI setup is probably the best, but throttle body injection is very complicated to set up and tune. Crazy expensive too.

Come to think of it I have heard good things about offenhauser.
Most fsj people get the edelbrock performer. The torker and rpm are more of a street rod manifold.

Buying a performance manifold & putting the pollution stuff back on it usually yields little of no improvement.
