What did you do to your FSJ this week?

Postby Murphy » Sun Apr 26, 2009 12:45 pm

I sugar-sand blasted the surface rust areas and got my faded heat-damaged hood painted. I just used rattle-can paint to seal the primer until I can get a full paint job.

What did you do to yours?

That whole write-up you did on that elsewhere would be good archive material here ;) but I know double postings are a real pain.

I got some good primer, a little Nason paint, and some sandblasting sugar-sand and went to work. Man this sucks. I've never did so much blasting and sanding in my life. :grumble:
I still only have the catalyzed primer on the roof, but at least most of the sanding, and all of the blasting is over with.

..and the rust is gone.

A garage would be nice. Except for doin the roof, may not be enough clearance for that. But for everything else it would work great. After I finish my roof I may tarp around my carport for the rest of it. :toothless:

I did use rattle cans at first on the hood just to seal the primer. You can see a little of it in one of the pics. That was 'Truck, Van, & SUV Paint' from Autozone. But I'm using real paint now, and gunna paint the whole thing. From everything I've heard Nason is about the best of the cheaper enamel paints. It's running me about $35/qt., but after catalyzed primer (TranStar Qwik Prime) and all the other stuff for a paint job, it's adding up fast. I can't even imagine how much it would cost if I used the good and expensive stuff like PPG. :hide:

Fixed the fuel leak. Replaced the plug wires. Fixed the wire to the coil that I managed to break replacing the plug wires. Looked at the fuel sending unit to see if I could fix it. Not sure how to get it out without some massive socket though.

Depending on which kind you have, a brass drift punch (no spark) or a big pair of channel locks/vice grips/crecent wrench or something like that. I'm going to be doing mine down the road but I haven't looked at it yet. If you have some kind of manual for it, they often give you a pretty good idea of how to do stuff and how to get to it. A $15 Haynes manual from the auto parts is money well spent.

I started replacing the rear brakes on the wife's GW, but I came to a quick stopping point (no pun inteneded) when the driver's side (the one I started with) automatic adjuster was hosed. Frozen up solid and can't budge it. NAPA will have to order them, don't have them in stock.

I put it back together and will finish it when I get the rest of the parts.
