Drive train conversion

I have a 79 Cherokee Sport widetrack and I am attempting my first body off restoration for a daily driver (the restoration part is for fun). My question is that I would like to go with a later model fuel injected engine and compatible drive train swap. I have been told to go with a 92 Chevy, a 93 Chevy or a 2001 - 2006 Chevy for the engine, transmission and transfer case. Further I've been told that I need to swap out the rear end of my Cherokee for one that is centered. What year would you recommend and do I need to swap out the rear end?

About all I can add to help you with is that the centered rear pinion axles were the AMC20 or D60 from the '80+ rigs.
