FSJ-Dually need to knows ? and should know ?

I was going to build my own J-truck dually but I found jeep offered a factory rig.

How dose one go about locating these trucks ?

What do they normally go for ?

What should one look for once one is located ?

For those of you who may have such a rig what will they tow ?

I want to replace my K2500 with a truck that can tow a load . . . 6.5 turbo diesel not for me I'm a gas engine person.

I may end up building a dually J/truck but If built I'm shooting for the class 4 or 5 sized truck, 450/4500-550/5500 range.

Those dually trucks are few and far between. For a modern tow rig you would probably find the course spline differentials/axle shafts and obscure R&P/brakes something you want to avoid unless you are into these more as a hobby. You can just buy a later Jtruck with improved steering and swap on some one ton axles from a GM 6x pickup (pickups have the wider D70HD).

My main concern with the factory Rig is that it has the D44/D70 combo with 6 lug Duel wheel rim's . . .

I was thinking of swapping some D60/D70 or D70/D70 axles under a factory dually but my goal isn't really to carry a heavier load the 8600lb GVWR is just fine, my 95' K2500 this FSJ will be replacing is rated for the same 8600lb GVWR . . .

I just wanted to end up with 8 lugged dually hub's so i could swap from 16's to 19.5's :cool:

7.50-16 = 32.2"
235/85R16 = 31.8"
225/70R19.5 = 32.5"

So there should be plenty of clearance right only about .5-.75" taller in the over all diameter basically the 255R19.5 is meant to replace the 16's, so now instead of load range D biasply's or load range E radial's i have load range F's . . .

By having the shorter side wall makes it more stable and with the heavier load rage means i'll be using less of the tires max load also increasing safety and gaining some extra tread life which is good for me cause i use MT & traction type tires . . .

The 225/70R19.5F's i want to use on this truck:

32.5" x 8.2" tire shown on 19.5 x 6.75 10 lug rim i believe i'll be using the 19.5 x 6.0" 8 lug rim not sure if i'll go steal or alloy . . .

The dash is pretty clean (at least compared to mine). I was about to start my dually project a few months back but got side tracked. My most recent project has finally moved out of my shop so now the dually project can start. Its going to include a bunch of body work as well. What are your plans for rear flares? I've been kicking that around for a while. Curious to hear your ideas and watch your build. :thumbsup:

If I bought a truck like the one mentioned above I would use the flares that are there providing my wheel tir selection would fit after the axle swap.
Other wise if I had to start with a SRW truck I was kicking around the idea of fanning up a set from close to the same gauge sheet steel ?

The D60/D70HD axle combo seems to be the ticket for dually pickups even into the more modern age.

But I been thinking about the D70/D80 combo used under the GM 3500HDs from 92-98ish ?

I agree with you :thumbsup: . I'll be using a D70u and springs I took of a Ford moving van. I'm still trying to source a D60 pass drop for the front. My last two I found, the buyers changed their minds at the last minute. :banghead:

Ya I was thinking the D60/D70 combo would be ideal so that way I could just leave it spring under axle as the 225 19.5s are about the same over all diameter as the 7.50-16s and the width of a 235/85R16s.

BTW...what site is that pic of the tire/wheel combo from. That is EXACTLY what I've been looking for. I was thinking it was from http://www.americanforcewheels.com but I didn't see those in there. Great choice I might add.

Very cool ! You ran 19.5s before ?

I have been using them for a few years now I love them I been switching all of my 8 lug DRW & SRW trucks over them.
I run the Mudders as you can see what I love is a 19.5 mid or traction tire lasts as long as 16 inch highway tire.

I used to run the biasply Mud luggers but they discontinued all of them and I had to switch over to radials and trying to find aggressive radials aren't easy.

The 8-19.5 Mudders went a little over 45K miles.

The 225-245/70R19.5 MTs, MTRs, and Severe service tractions go about 60-75K miles.

No I haven't but have heard good things. This will be my 1st dually to own. I have a bunch of rust issues to address so I will be doing that while sourcing my other parts. I'm going to be mating my cab with a GW to make a crew cab. I already picked up a long bed (it has rust on it but is in better shape than others I've found). My YJ project just left my shop so I hope to bring the J-2000 home from storage in the next couple of weeks.

Trust me you will love the 19.5s great tread wear outstanding reliability plus the safety aspect of them.
Yes they hold more weight dosent mean you gotta tow more, just he lower the percentage pod the tires peak load the less like it'll fail !

So for me 19.5s = saving money while saving lives !

They might be a bit over kill to some on a SRW truck but still look sweet, But they are a must for any DRW truck In My Opinion :cool:
