UK / British jeep duallys

Postby Neontubeman » Tue Feb 23, 2010 9:03 pm

Hi Guys , Ive just registered on your website , been looking at it on and off over the past few months . Its very interesting and informative.
Briefly, I am from Derby in the Midlands in the UK . ( What can this guy know about US trucks , let alone Jeep duallys I hear you all thinking ?) .As you all probably know US vehicles arnt very common over here in the UK ( except a few models sold over here in right hand drive , like Chrysler Neon , Voyager , Cherokees ,etc ). I am unusual ( for a guy in the UK ) in that I love US vehicles and have always had them ( mostly pickups ) since I got my licence over 20 years ago. I should point out that I am not especially knowledgeable on Jeeps , I have had a variety of different vehicles , mostly Ford pickups , but I have come across some very interesting full size Jeeps here in the UK.

Some years ago I almost bought a right hand drive Jeep dually. It was for sale at a US car specialist here in the UK . It was getting old when I looked at it ( this was about 1990 ) and needed quite a lot of work , though it was a runner , as they say over here. In the end I didnt buy it ( I found and fell in love with a beautiful 1986 Ford F350). I often wonder what happened to the old Jeep though . It had a full size ( 8 ft ) pick up bed and looked like it had always been a pickup.
This wasnt the first Jeep dually Ive seen here in the UK , I ve seen a few over the years and reckon there must be a quite few about over here. As you Guys probably know , in the 70s , right hand drive Wagoneers were quite common here.

My real reason for posting on here is to mention a Jeep dually I have seen on TV , and keep seeing on repeats of the show. The show is an old British series called " Minder" that ran for years from 1979 to about 2004. It starred George Cole as Arthur Daley and Dennis Waterman as Terry McCann. I wont go into details , if you guys get this show over there youll know it ?
If you get this show , check out an episode from 1989 called " Its a sorry lorry morrie ". Aparently it was the first episode of Season 7 of the show. Roy Kinnear plays a character called " Fat Harry " , who drives a beautiful right hand drive Jeep dually wrecker. I ocassionally catch the show repeated on one or two of the cable channels and always watch this episode just to see this rare old truck.
I thought you guys would be interested and may even be able to get some pictures of this truck for the registry , maybe it could even be traced from the licence plate?
My apologies for going on at length here ,Ill get this posted now. Briefly can anyone tell me if the right hand drive duallys and Wagonneers that we got here in the UK were factory right handers or were they converted left handers ?

They were factory built right handers.
